VR and AR, Let’s see what they are!

Irrespective of whether you are tech savvy or not, you may have come across these acronyms at least once in the past. Be it in the gaming world, health care sector, entertainment industry or even mobile applications, VR and AR are used everywhere.

To begin with, VR stands for ‘Virtual Reality’. In layman’s terms, virtual reality is putting yourself in the virtual world. This is possible with the help of a head-mounted device called as a ‘VR Headset’.

Virtual reality is technically, an immersive computer simulated environment, which gives the user a feeling of being present in that imaginary environment instead of the one in which the person is actually present. When present in the three-dimensional virtual world, the user can manipulate and interact with the virtual objects.

The VR headset mainly has two lenses for the eyes and an internal socket to hold a mobile device; by using the appropriate application program on the mobile device, one can experience the three-dimensional aspect of virtual reality.
In fact, even YouTube has enabled its users to watch certain 360 degree videos in the VR mode. We can also find some Standalone VR headsets, which don’t require additional application programs and can function without inserting mobile devices.

Whereas, AR stands for ‘Augmented Reality’. It was invented in the early 1990s. Augmented Reality is simply placing digital objects in the real world. Example: Placing fun filters on your face!

AR is a technology that provides a composite view by superimposing a computer-generated image on the real world view in the user’s mobile device.

Augmented Reality requires a software which scans your surroundings and displays all the relevant information based on your location. Through the GPS facility on mobile devices, the location or landmark is searched and information regarding the same is obtained from the web browser and displayed virtually over the real-world object on the display screen. This concept of Augmented Reality has been used by Snapchat and also in the popular mobile game, Pokémon GO.

To sum it up, VR – Virtual Reality provides a complete immersion experience and transposes the user into it by closing connection with the real world.
AR – Augmented reality allows the user to be present in the real world and a virtual entity is laid over it.
